Contemporary New Age Review: Paul Adams and Elizabeth Geyer-A Journey of Dreams

Release Date: November 15, 2024

Label: Independent

Website:  www.pauladams.org  / www.elizabethgeyer.com

Paul Adams and Elizabeth Geyer have been teaming up for many years and producing some fine and very eclectic offerings for a listening base that can span worldwide. The most recent release is A Journey of Dreams, ready for everyone to experience. I stress the word experience, which is the key to this music. From new age to Americana, blues, and ambient, this talented duo utilizes all their talents to create individual pieces of art.

"A Journey of Dreams" is their title track to start this recording and the second longest track at 6:00 minutes. The Native American Anasazi Flute and slide guitar provided by Paul and Elizabeth's keyboards and vocalizations are a superb marriage of sound. The synth layer is like a soft sound cloud for everything to glide nicely—an excellent lead-off track to correctly set the mood and experiential process.

"The Emergence" starts with the piano, wordless vocals, and the flute's fantastic and relaxing earthly tones. The word emergence indicates the realization of something happening physically or spiritually, so from my listening perspective, it is either physically, mentally, or something otherworldly or esoteric. And this can be about a person, place, or thing. Again, my thoughts only and my perception. The music triggered my feelings and thoughts, which is what it is supposed to do. The electric sitar makes its "emergence," giving the composition a more world feel, and it's an excellent addition.

"The Arrival" follows in perfect sequence to the last track about the title, first the emergence, then the arrival. You may ask yourself, what is the arrival? I can relate to what I previously stated in my spiritual, physical, and mental state. The piano is subtle, and the layer of consistent synth with the differentiators of the harmonica and sitar. Two elements combine to add to this mix of new age and world flute for a trance-like, meditative sound.

"Gabriel" is a title that immediately recognizes anyone familiar with the Bible or religions. As little as I know, I did find recognition, and I do with biblical names. I heard some of the same this time, but a horn is added to the mix, giving it a floaty jazz element. So many different instruments come into play in these tracks that, at times, it defies explanation or any generalization, which is a good thing.

"A Beautiful Sadness" is a thought-provoking title. So where does one find that? I hear and feel it all the time in music. This track holds a beauty, but at the same time, you could be engaged to reflect on a sadness you have been feeling or a part of your life where that happened, and you can never forget it. While the music soothes and guides with the layer of synths, the flute, piano, and sitar, it leads you down a clear path to find the truth and meaning of each word.

"The Lightness" is bright and airy, relieving the previous sadness; however beautiful it was, some dark areas and grey shadings need cleansing. Here, you find it in the music again; its magic is in the feeling of lightness around you as it carries you to another frame of mindfulness and space without barriers. The constancy of that synth layer is always there as the foundation to add all the other instruments, giving you comfort. It highlights the flute's organic, earthy tones and the acoustic guitar's subtle yet impactive strings.

In “Contemplation,” a word that the music allows to come through and process, the duo's talents shine. Much like the pied piper throughout this journey, Paul's flute brings immediate calmness to your receptors. Elizabeth's dreamy, wordless vocalizations add a touch of heaven. At the same time, the sitar and its Middle Eastern flavor bring a spiritual and ethnic element to the track, creating a powerful combination that resonates deeply.

"Drifting" is the most extended composition at 6:25 minutes. A word indicative of what this kind of music can initiate in a listener, whether you call it relaxation, meditation, or a form of hypnotic state, drifting is part of getting into that place. The piano plays a more significant role this time, and its significance is noticeable. The dobro was a nice touch and addition with its definitive echoing sound.

"Somewhere There Is Hope" for all of us. Should that be a statement or question? It is a statement that can apply to anyone's life regardless of the situation. I have been there several times, as I imagine many of you have. If you are following the story to this point, you can see how it all fell into sequence and how we got here through all the other tracks and their meaningful titles. A track title is a hint, and you need to take it from there. This music continues down the path you have been on, with the flute, piano, and ambient synths creating that backdrop for thought, reflection, and healing in the music, which in turn gives us hope.

"The Reward" is yours to take now that you have made it to the end of this journey. The music's purity and healing frequencies, tones, and colors again give you clarity and meaning. It is unencumbered by racing thoughts or a mental "to-do list," which magically disappears in the flute, piano, sitar, vocalizations, and the different instrumentations that allow you to go to another place in time and space. This track encapsulates all of that in just under six minutes.

The title and artwork are engaging and give you a good idea of the journey you are about to partake. The music is suitable for relaxing and meditating, and if you choose to do some dreaming during the day or evening, it is perfect for that as well. And that is the point of this music and A Journey of Dreams.

From the Heinous to the Sublime, Paul Adams and Elizabeth Geyer Release New Single “A Journey of Dreams” As a Prelude to Their Upcoming Album

Worldwide release 12/7/23

Chicago, IL – Living thousands of miles apart, United States based, award-winning multi-instrumentalist, Paul Adams, and Australia based, award-winning multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, Elizabeth Geyer, have been creating music together from opposite ends of the globe since their debut collaboration, “Imaginings.” Across the oceans and continents, something definitely worked synergistically and continues to work. Their album won the award, “Contemporary Instrumental Album of the Year” at the Zone Music Reporter Awards in 2015.

Following, “Imaginings,” came “Deeper Imaginings” and “Sanctuary,” the New Age Music Guide's “Album of the Year” of 2022. Continuing to unfold the timeless, spiritual sanctuary that has become a trademark of their music, comes a new single from their next album, “A Journey Of Dreams.” The single, the title track from the new forthcoming album, involves Adams’ creative musical talent and his collection of exotic instruments as well as the electric sitar he made in the days when he was a luthier. Their successful journeys have amassed over 132 million streams on Pandora as well as regular programming on SiriusXM Radio.

Blended with Elizabeth Geyer’s sensitive piano and instrumental vocalizations, “A Journey of Dreams,” continues the beautiful and exotic flow of their previous releases. Adams said, “We wanted to focus on beauty, especially as the world seems to be in such deep chaos.” When referring to Geyer’s solo album projects, Bruce Lundvall of Blue Note Records called Elizabeth “A brilliant musician and songwriter.” For “A Journey Of Dreams,” Elizabeth says her intention was to create a place of safety and home. “Imagine a place where you once came from, where you will go back to, and a place you sometimes visit in dreams.”

With its exotic nature and ethnic impressions, Adams describes the piece as offering a bit of artistic and spiritual pragmatism. “It's all right here on ‘circus Earth’ – from the heinous to the sublime. We felt a need to create something that might focus on the deep beauty we are all capable of. We feel as if God, nature, or whatever you wish to call it, is challenging us. ‘She’s’ wondering if we have the interpersonal maturity and cultural skills to work together in this rapidly changing, growing, yet shrinking world.”

Paul Adams: Keys, Dobro, Sitar, Anasazi Flute
Elizabeth Geyer: Piano, Vocalizations

Award Winning New Age Artists Paul Adams and Elizabeth Geyer Release New Album “Sanctuary”

In recent years upheaval and uncertainty has become normal for many of us. Our careers, possessions, health, even relationships are more fragile than we realized. More than ever we need that sanctuary, the safe blissful place that can only be found within.

Following on from their previous successful collaborations including “Imaginings” (Winner, ZMR's Instrumental Album of the year) and “Deeper Imaginings” (nominated for both Zone and Independent Music Awards), Paul Adams and Elizabeth Geyer now bring us “Sanctuary,” nine new pieces borne out of their own - and our global collective need - to heal and re-anchor to our soul's true home in uncertain times. Included is an art insert of poetry focusing on peace, self - acceptance and songs within.

Solo artists each in their own right - multi award winner Adams has 120 million Pandora streams alone and Geyer's singer/songwriter albums have drawn high praise from industry heavyweights including EMI/ Blue Note's Bruce Lundvall, Jim Moginie (Midnight Oil) and multiple Grammy winner Bill Champlin (Chicago, The Sons of Champlin). It was one windy morning in Illinois two years ago which sparked the idea for “Sanctuary.”

In my view this has to be one of the best New Age music releases I have heard for many years… an award winning album of true majesty…. and a multi-instrumental delight!” - Steve Sheppard, One World Music, UK

Elizabeth was meditating in a dark room to stave off a blinding migraine while Paul practiced the breathy Anasazi and Native American flute downstairs. Something about the combination of the wind and the low gentle phrases Paul was playing was curiously grounding and she began to feel better. Wondering what was different about these sounds from other gentle music they'd created and explored, it was the comforting reassurance of a constant low anchor that seemed to be holding the dreamy, soaring, floating textures. Put simply, music that flies without ever flying away.  Music is an incredible medium; it can excite, confront, take us to the edge; equally other music can nurture, comfort and heal. “Sanctuary” is both a powerful grounding meditation soundtrack while equally artistically rich. Adam's sultry electric sitar and other worldly touches and Geyer's distinctive jazz sensibilities on piano and vocal make “Sanctuary” both indulgence for the soul and a perfect healing backdrop for these troubled times.

Here’s what the press has said about “Sanctuary”:

With ‘Sanctuary,’ Adams and Geyer once again prove that they are among this genre's finest artists... the soundscape is everything... beautiful beyond words.” - B T Fasmer, New Age Music Guide, Belgium

The addition of various other textured layers of sounds like electric sitar, chimes, etc... Elizabeth's wordless background vocalizations. make for a completely immersive experience. I suggest putting this on a loop.” - Keith “MuzikMan” Hannaleck, New Age Music Reviews, USA

“… soundscapes that draw you in and keep you comforted and relaxed are outstanding... both a salve  for the soul and peace for the mind.” - Clouzine Magazine, United Kingdom

Using flute, piano and voice, the duo have created nine rich, earthy tracks of ambient and world music that seem to have a life of their own… It is like immersing in waters made of music... Highly recommended.” - RJ Lannan, Artisan Music Reviews, USA

New Age-World Fusion Review: Paul Adams & Elizabeth Geyer-Deeper Imaginings

Release Date: November 15, 2019
Label: Independent
Website: https://pauladams.org/  http://www.elizabethgeyer.com/

Paul Adams and Elizabeth have combined their talents once again to release Deeper Imaginings.  In 2015 the incarnation of this meeting came out titled Imaginings.

Every recording artist intends to reach their audience in some way. Dependent on the genre it can be for various reasons. When it comes to any kind of new age music, I have the opportunity to hear, there is one main focus, to bring a sense of comfort and healing to their prospective audience.

These very talented musicians that I like to refer to as artisans, decided to create something with a little bit of everything in it to make it a very interesting journey. I think it takes the soul of a multi-talented artist to create a project like Deeper Imaginings. In this case, it took several individual's contributions to make this project work. This amazing combination of new age, jazz, and world, is ultimately a satisfying fusion of all three genres. This is where the deeper reference comes in, it started as imaginings and now it is much deeper and reflective.

“The Unfolding” is a rich blend of genres with a calming fluidness to give it that meditative atmosphere of healing and an aura of energy. It has a far east flavor to it which puts a smile in my heart. I added it to my NAMR Spotify Playlist where it should be, alongside all the other great tracks by an artist in the same community that I want to create awareness of.

“Hope For The Game” has an interesting spoken word addition to go along with the music, yet another “deeper” dive into what can be our imaginings as sentient beings visiting this planet. We are just visitors for our lifetime and the planet will remain, at least we have that hope. We have the hope of a “New Morning” while we inhabit mother earth, that will live to see its beauty for another day. This is my interpretation however I do believe the recording artists would like to know that all those tracks are felt positively by each listener. I don’t think that will be a problem with this recording.

The combination of instruments is quite fascinating and different than your typical new age release because of the jazz element injected by Elizabeth Geyer’s Flugelhorn. Then her piano also helps that taste of jazz and in retrospect gives each track an entirely different musical window to look through. But then again, every instrument that is included adds another dimension, layer, and or texture making it all a very unique and symbol of the diversity of talent afforded a listener throughout the run of the eleven tracks.

Paul brings a lot to the table as well with a guitar, sitar, Chinese halusi, percussion, oud, synth, and dobro. This is where the world sound comes in and adds the spice and variety to each composition. All the elements come together for an amazing final partnership within each track. The “Endless Horizon” of sound and color will keep each listener enchanted from beginning to end. I find music with this much diversity to have the word “world” in it for one reason, we are one world and one people having the desire to live and love. This is one reminder of that goal.

Elizabeth Geyer: Piano, flugelhorn, vocals

New Age Artists Paul Adams & Elizabeth Geyer To Release DEEPER IMAGININGS on November 15, 2019

DEEPER IMAGININGS by Paul Adams & Elizabeth Geyer is a follow up to 2015's IMAGININGS

Bringing together some of the worlds most accomplished musicians, DEEPER IMAGININGS by Paul Adams and Elizabeth Geyer is a follow up to 2015's IMAGININGS which debuted #1 on the iTunes new age chart and was the Zone Music Reporter's best Contemporary Instrumental Album of the year. It was a journey of happenstance, whimsy and the joy of sharing music and love between cultures. Elizabeth came all the way from Australia. Pravin Godkhindi played bansuri flute in India. Alp Akmaz who played the balaban (similar to duduk) is from Turkey. Former trumpet soloist and arranger David Hoffman is based in Illinois, and Gary Green of the legendary UK band Gentle Giant added gentle guitar.

Adams, with over 102 million streams on Pandora has shown that walking the road less traveled can work. “We all love to create much like a painter. The choice of color and hue is from the artist's whim and is independent from corporate dictate. I was thrilled to be able to use some of the instruments I built in my earlier years as a luthier. Guitars, dulcimer and electric sitar was blended with the natural genius of Elizabeth Geyer's piano, flugelhorn and voice, used in a textural and ambient way. Her ear is stunning and her musical intuition and training in jazz blended well with my rather improvised gentle folk approach, as well as training in ethnomusicology”

For Adams and Geyer, meeting Pravin Godkhindi on YouTube and Alp Akmaz on Instagram seems appropriate given today’s ease of technology. The fact that the musical co-operation was so natural shows what a tool it is to embrace and grow as the world shrinks around us. Adams comments that “there was an intuitive vibe in connecting with these musicians. A lot of freedom was encouraged. We had faith that each knew the best way to fill their role, and they really did.”

New Age/Ethnic Fusion Review: Paul Adams-Imaginings

Release Date: September, 1, 2015
Label: Lakefront

Paul Adams is a man of many talents. A crafter of fine instruments, an artist, composer and nine critically acclaimed albums crossing several genres, what can this man not do? Imaginings is his newest accomplishment and together with the talented musicians Elizabeth Geyer, Pravin Godkhindi and David Hoffman they have crafted an album filled with meditative moments and pure fodder for the imagination just as the title to the album suggests. Instruments used in this album include the guitar, piano, hang drum, Chinese halusi, dobro, electric sitar and flute.

The album opens up with the haunting strains of an electric sitar and the winding trails of flute music. Bearing the kiss of a piano, “Just Such Beauty” is a foray into the rainforest of lush musical experience. A buzzing sound denotes life uncoiling all around you as the breathless flute weaves a spell of expectation and bliss. This piece lulls the spirit into another place, guiding you past the trials of the day and into a higher place of spirit and substance.

“Giggles and Grooves” is the second piece on the album and is a funny little piece complete with the laughter of children, flute, percussive elements and electric sitar. This song is the bounce and hop of a small child as they play ball with their friends. The skip and jump of a puppy learning first steps. The bubble in your belly of first love. A flower given. A grin on your face as your heart floats as light as the flute playing. Love and laughter live here within each and every note.

“Conch Shell by the Sea” is the last piece on the album. Echoes of time slip through the wisps of flute music as they sigh past your ear and into the vast ocean beyond. Piano music creates the waves that swirl and rush past your ankles as you step into the forever ocean. Life is limitless. Your possibilities great and ever flowing as the whisper of the conch spells out the secrets of the universe.

“Imaginings” is an album rich with imagery that crosses into the New Age genre and also makes its mark with World Music. Improvisation runs rife through the thought provoking pieces, tangling up the spirit in a maze of lush plant life and effervescent compositions. Melodies hum and spin, carrying the listener deep into the meditative places that promote healing and stress relief. This is a remarkable album and I highly recommend it for some quality sound.
